What should I do if my water heater is leaking from the bottom?

Shut it down and call for service. A bottom leak usually means a failing tank or a leaking drain valve, and continued operation can cause water damage. We provide 24/7 emergency water-heater service in Indianapolis and nearby communities.

Quick steps:

  • Turn off power: breaker for electric; set gas control to Off for gas.
  • Close the cold-water shutoff valve on top of the heater.
  • If leaking heavily, attach a hose to the drain valve and drain to reduce pressure.
  • Keep the area clear and dry.
